This week I experienced one of those inevitable lows in the creative process. A painting I had recently begun with high hopes suddenly felt directionless and repetitive. The oil paint became sluggish and unmalleable in Berlin’s unexpected heat wave, along with my own willpower.
Seeking inspiration and an escape from negativity, I looked back at Richard Diebenkorn’s paintings done in San Francisco from the 1950’s-1960’s when he went back to painting from observation in and outside his studio. These paintings drip with a sense of light and temperature and the paint feels as if its been wrestled into brilliancy. What would I do to paint like that?! In any case, it gave me back enough longing to try again and not be afraid to “destroy” the painting in the process.
